Discover Torrevieja: Start here!

Welcome to torreviejaspain.com – your starting point for an unforgettable adventure in the vibrant heart of Spain!

Torrevieja, located on the Costa Blanca in Spain, has a history closely linked to the sea and salt production. Originally a small fishing village, it was named after an old watchtower ("La Torre Vieja") from the 14th century, which protected the coast from pirates.

In 1802, the city was officially recognised by King Charles IV when salt production from the nearby lagoons (Las Salinas) was centralised. This led to economic and population growth in the 19th century, despite a devastating earthquake in 1829.

In the 20th century, Torrevieja developed into a popular tourist destination, especially from the 1960s onwards. The mild climate, beaches and salt lakes attracted more and more visitors. Today, the city is a cosmopolitan community, with tourism as its main economic sector, although salt production is still active. Torrevieja remains known for its natural parks and cultural events, such as the International Habaneras Festival.
